Every person on this Earth is a Teacher!!!

I came across an interesting video that touched my heart so deeply, I decided to blog about it.

[Technical note: If the video does not play, copy & paste the above URL in browser]

It's not just the video, but the thought invoked by watching the video that each day, each one of us has an opportunity to teach someone something. No matter who you are or where you are---someone is watching.

Therefore, we have a choice by either displaying a positive or negative behavior to an audience in the grocery store, library, airport, backyard, local park or classroom.

Think about it, I'm sure you have watched younger children imitate teenagers, teenagers imitate video games, adults imitate other adults, etc. While adults should be able to choose the appropriate behavior to imitate, at times it is questionable. Because children are so impressionable, they don't reason out a behavior before imitating it so the adults should be aware of their behavior.

You don't need a college degree to be more aware of your behavior and the impact it has in the largest classroom we will ever encounter----The World.

The World will be a better place when the "Positive" behaviors outweigh the "Negative" behaviors.

Watch the video again and feel free to weigh-in with your thoughts & examples on how we can begin to impact education by displaying appropriate behaviors.

"New" schoolyear, "Old" expectations or "New" schoolyear, "Higher" expectations?

"New" schoolyear, "Low" expectations or "New" schoolyear, "Higher" expectations?

I begin this school year with a different outlook on education.  For the past two years, I have been researching, observing and evaluating classrooms and educational facilities across the United States (ie, atmosphere of learning, academic statistics, student behavior, student motivation, teacher passion  and district support).  In this era of increased use of social media, technology and cable television, I must admit this has been quite a task.  I have been "the fly on the wall" as I have had an inside view of classrooms as a parent, teacher, service provider, observer.

My main reason for taking on this task was to find out what works in education and what is not working in education? That is a question that is on the minds of many in the past decades.            Plain and simple....

Parents + Students + Teachers + Community = Students prepared for Life

Yes, there must be parental involvement, student motivation, teacher passion and community support as inputs for successful students.  Breakdown in any of the above areas will negatively impact students.  Therefore, we must all get involved early in their lives and stay involved.  Our involvement must not be physically(only), but we must be mentally involved in the process with an intentional expectation and actions for positive results.

As we begin a new school year, do we have the same mediocre expectations or do we have higher expectations of learning for our children, our students and our school districts? I hope the answer is higher expectations for learning.  While this is the tip of the iceberg, a greater commitment to education is necessary by all adults in the lives of children.

More to come......

I have always tried to be careful of my actions around my students, but now I am more conscious. Just yesterday, I considered giving a smart remark in response to a student's smart remark. Instead, realizing other students were watching, I replied in a calm voice and asked why they would respond in that manner. I pray that someone learned because it was a stretch. But, that is what needs to be done.
